I would say software personally, have you taken a look into what job opportunities you will get from each? Also I find it helps to make a list of pros and cons with things like this it will help you make your choice. As you can already see the world is becoming more digital so I see a big market for the software part of you want to think that far ahead onto the future I'm not sure how old you are but if you're young enough don't worry if you feel you made the wrong choice you can always fix it later as I have done myself! I have an IT practitioners certificate at A level which I did at school an I did change modules during so just keep your options open :)

Hope that makes it a bit clearer for you.

I personally love the hardware aspect of things. But I would say there are more opportunities with software, as mikey said the world is going digital.

Hardware...you end up working in a warehouse somewhere soldering broken stuff, maybe designing components, if your lucky.

Software you get to work from home coding, and if you write the next call of duty, or facebook.....you become infinitely rich.

I actually like hardware better, but way more money in software.

Hardware is something you do if you wish to sell parts that'll cooperate with the software. ;)

In other words, become a software engineer.

  • 3 weeks later...

Now you have to decide what kind of software you want to develop (web, pc gaming, console gaming, productivity suites, etc), and where in the production line you want to sit (designer, coder, tester, etc). Then learn a language most suited to your choices

Generally, HTML, PHP and Javascript are used for web development, C/C++ with lua for game development, although I think XBox uses C# through XNA. Stuff like Word and Excel are normally written in a variant of C(++/#). Scripting is generally added through python or lua

IT technicians should generally have a working knowledge of both hardware (both computers and network infrastructure) and software as you can be asked to do anything from clean a virus-infected pc to create an intranet for the company you're working for
