AOW

42 posts in this topic

There's a good handful of people that want Aow removed. I been telling them the last 3 days to make a post and stop whining but they havent. I'm not even gonna say who they are because they cant come to the forums and tell us themselves. Carry on.

No. This is what makes RC unique that we have a combination of both.

Then again, we COULD make a poll.

I like AOW, and I like the setup we have with it. I need a break from marathon. I feel like most AOW's end in base destruction anyways.

It's good to have aow (although I prefer marathon). Problem is (as I've said countless times and nobody paid attention) is that the damn aow timer not only triggers way too often (sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row), but also mixes up with maps that are aow by default (sand, under rxd, field), which ends up sometimes in a case scenario where of 7 maps you've played, 5 were aow and 2 marathon. And that's ridiculous. And that's why some people complain. And I can understand why. This was a marathon server that got the aow % triggering to please the aow lovers. Not an aow server that has a marathon map once in a while.

That's their main point, and that's what's making more and more people complain about aow.

Then maybe we should set the AOW default maps (aside from sands) to marathon, and just roll out with the regular 20%.

Players with little skill will always complain about AOW.

It's time some people grew up, grew some balls, and learned to play Renegade.

Personally, I would prefer if we had 30 min AOW on all the Maps.

(except the silly inf only ones which should be removed from the rotation anyway).

I always found funny when people that don't play ren anymore try to make their opinion more worthy than the one from people that do actually play the game, just because in the past they were somewhat average at aiming a tank and shooting. It's like when in Jelly people that didn't play the game anymore for years were making their suggestions go ahead while the players that actually were playing all days were demanding exactly the contrary, and managed to get nothing.

Aow nowadays has nothing to do with skill. It all sums up in one word: whoring. The first team that manages to whore more wins. It's that simple. Takes no skill, no work, no coordination.

Also, people that want marathon (and that actually play renegade) know how much fun an endless game can be, where waves of tanks come and go, where both teams win and lose the field, where rushes are coordinated and people try to sneak. Where a crate can change a game and where you don't have to be rushing everywhere, and can take your time to enjoy the map, because another reason people want more marathon is to enjoy more some maps.

So to all those who live in the past of ancient reneglory days of aow and cws but that don't play ren anymore it's cool to have an opinion and sugestions, but unless 1: you actually play renegade on a daily basis, and 2: you're aware of what our current players want, it's better that you just stick to remember those ancient days and let the people that actually play decide what they want, without judging what's better or what kind of skill they have, since nobody here is entitled to say what renegade mode is better or what kind of skill people do have depending on what they like.

You can say what you like (always), and what you'd like to change (only if you actually play). Value judgements are just a no go.

Delusional, i don't think i know you.

You clearly don't know me, Are you, by any chance, an EU Commissioner?

You're post in response to my comment is a perfect example of why people like me (not that I currently can) don't bother to play Renegade anymore.

Your, higher than Mighty attitude, is something that really pisses people off. Who do you think you are to tell me what I prefer or what I think is best?

If I don't agree with you I am some Renegade dinosaur who the game is better off without?

Some outstanding moderator who encourages players to play Renegade you are.

Well, (clears throat) FUCK YOU ASSHOLE.

You might want to reread your post. What you despise is precisely what you've done. I'm nobody to tell you anything yet you came here in the middle of a debate that we were having saying that people who complain about aow have no skill and lack balls. Nobody is entitled to say that. And that's what I'm trying to make you and the people who live in the past learn. It matters little to none who you were, who you are, the skill you had or the skill you have. The only thing that matters is what players want and demand. Rest can live up in cw servers.

Why are you even a Moderator here?

I state my opinion and you belittle and demean it?

And thank you for letting me know that I don't matter.

To quote you.:  I'm nobody to tell you anything.

You should keep it that way in future.

I didn't attack anyone, yet, for the record. Not my fault that english has only one word to adress one person and many persons at the same time: you.

When I said "It matters little to none who you were, who you are, the skill you had or the skill you have" I was refering to every single past, present and future player, not to Gumby.

I agree with delu.

I feel like people don't even try to do anything in aow, they don't communicate with the team while this game should be "team" based kinda.. ( comes from someone that snipes 80% of the times, i know ) But still in Marathon people communicate so much more and play like a team, it feels so much better when you win after a long battle. And i noticed that more people are staying aswell. :)

It doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter that I can't play Renegade and might never do so again.

Awww this topic is too cute. It reminds me of the days of yore where real drama went on. Thank you for that reminder. :beerhere:

Here's what I am seeing for this month:

July 1 to July 20 5:11pm(when BunkersTS ended abit ago)

Hours = Games
<1m = 2
1m = 0
2m = 9
3m = 99
4m = 90
5m = 125
6m = 126
7m = 115
8m = 94
9m = 68
10m = 385
20m = 255
30m = 45
40m = 23
50m = 23
<1h = 1459 total
1h = 48
2h = 12
3h = 8
4h = 1
total = 1528 games

My GameMode script isn't catching something, and I am not sure what. It's getting Server shutdowns/map wins on game modes, but I'm not sure the ones it is not(polls?).
Marathon = 945
AOW = 383
Games unaccounted for = 200

*edit* might be High Score, I didn't add that into the mix before, oops.

So aside from games unaccounted for, AOW counts for 28% of the games. If you set field and under rxd to mara, it should get a lot closer to something like 23% (with sands still in) and if we ever manage to set up back the snipe server, we could get rid of sands in the regular rotation and get closer to a real 20%.

You can also look at the data fom games only 30min and less compared to more than 30 min (considering that for any game finished under 30min it doesn't matter whether it's AOW or mara, people mostly complain after timer reach 0 and they didn't catch up it wasn't mara...). There's 1368 games completed in under 30min and only 160 that lasted longer. Mara games taking over 30min account for only 10% at this time BUT this isn't very accurate considering the two maps that usually take the longest time (under rxd and field) were set to 100% AOW every two times they show up (under and field being twice in the rotation, as rxd or non-rxd version). I'd be interested in seeing numbers for mara under/field only, I wouldn't be surprised to see this number increase to something like 50%.

Big long games are what build up player count, so in this age of small games because Ren is decades old I think the idea of more mara isn't that bad. Also, it's important to hear what the players truly want and I've been hearing a lot whining as well every time AOW show's up.

This is going to be a mix of what everyone said but here goes. When I first started playing again, I wanted AOW because that's what I enjoyed back in the day. But after playing for awhile, I noticed marathon is what really got the player counts up. I fucking despise Under and Field but I suck it up because it brings in 40 players. However, I do believe some maps need to be AOW. I don't want to ever play a Sand, Bunkers, or Snow marathon, hell I don't even want those maps in the rotation. They are the biggest player count killers in the rotation. Keep track of player counts and players quitting and I can assure you there will be some sort of correlation between Sand and player counts going from 40 to 12.  Our objective as a community should be to do whatever in our power to drive player counts up. However, that is just my opinion and I do whatever the community wants. Whatever makes Rencorner happy, makes me happy.

Incorrect. Marathon games are nothing but "whoring" lets be real here. You get a map like under or field, and its literally 2-3+ hours of shooting the hand of nod as GDI, while half your team is in the tunnels with snipers (its EXTREMELY boring). So I mean your argument that AOW is just "whoring" and that marathon requires teamwork is quite hypocritical IMO.

AOW requires a lot more skill/team work. You need to counter "whoring" with rushes/team work. Where as in marathon people can try and do retarded things because there is no time limit/consequences for what they're doing.

I do understand that the teamwork I speak of rarely happens at all in the server because most people just kinda do their own thing (with the exception of a few).

To appease people you COULD make the time limits like an hour or something. This would give a fair chance for people to counter the "whoring".

This hopefully would appease the neigh saying whiners, I mean there's really only 2 guys who consistently whine about it and one of them is kinda laughable with his team of players numbered 1-8.

In summary, I personally really enjoy that a couple of the maps are timed, it makes the server be less boring, and adds a couple interesting games to the rotation.

EDIT: Some people are saying that marathon brings the player count up, and it may. But I personally think its the peak times that bring in the players, not that its a marathon game. Like at a certain time in the late afternoon, the server seems to fill up regardless of if its AOW or Marathon (are there maybe some statistics to back that up owners)? I might be wrong, but that's how it seems.

Seems like the opposite to me, with AOW you can just whore their base and rack points until the timer runs down while in mara you need to get in and blow some structures to win. Blowing defended bases requires team work, racking points a lot less. Also, your argument with snipers is bad since people who want to snipe in tuns will do so regardless of game mode.

I'd be inclined to agree if this was discussed 10 years ago, but with the current level of competiton most decent players know that just whoring is enough to win in AOW without ever taking chances.

I do see your point, but the two gametype's will usually play out pretty similarly, the only difference is you don't have to go through HOURS of whoring buildings in AOW.

Yes you do have to actually kill the buildings in marathon, but I personally find the gameplay to be stale at times. I just like the versatility of having both AOW and Marathon.

Also I know you like to snipe, so I can see how the sniper part would make you a little uneasy, but the fact of the matter is, if half the snipers were in tanks, the games would be a lot shorter. The marathon games usually end when after whoring for a long while, you can finally convince enough people to get tanks to rush, which can in itself be a pain in the ass.

There are useful scenario's for snipers, especially on field or under, but it mainly is shooting arty's/mrls and not just camping the tunnels, which *most* snipers are not willing to do.

But that's neither here nor there, the AOW games are like 30 mins.... is it really THAT bad? Anywhoo didn't mean to ruffle feathers with that post, its just my opinion on the matter. Even if AOW is abolished I would still play at rencorner, so meh.

I completely agree. AOW's force players to play strategically instead of screwing around doing whatever they want. So because in order to win, players cannot do whatever they want and must do whats necessary, they dislike it. When one team has been whoring for 25/30m, thats because the losing team lacked the strategy to stop it. Snipers in particular have a hard time, however since point-fix is enabled, they're not as terrible at Renegade as they should be (especially on Sand. how hard is it to use cheaper characters so the enemy cant grab the point lead??? morons.)

Also not 1 of the people demanding "remove AOW" ingame has posted yet.

Here is my problem with public AOW. If my team doesn't want to work together and the other team is churning out tanks left and right, 9/10 my team will lose on points or just flat out lose a building unless I pull some sneaky shit and convince my team to buy tanks. By that time it would be too late. I don't think public players understand aow. There have been exceptions and I have been in some back and forth AOW games.

I have no problem with aow but I would like it if the time limit was 45 minutes instead of 30. That could be my inner marathon coming out; I feel like 30 is too short. I think n00bstories had 45 min matches.
